By the time this film came out Sly was the exact same age as Mickey was in the first ROCKY(1976) movie. And this makes for the 7th time Sly has played Balboa.
THOUGHTS AND BEST BITS
Right in the middle when poor Rocky finds out hes ill broke my damn heart. Couldnt believe they would do it to poor old Rocko... even though you see it in the trailer i still was gutted.
ok so going in i was hopeful i wanted to see Rocky being given a chance to finally turn into Mickey and train someone and was thinking this was gonna be it. Sadly for me this was not great and heres why.
We kick off with a pointless not needed scene as we see some kid in a care home fighting... yeh yeh i get it hes been fighting his whole life not like you said it a million times in the trailer or that i dont need dumby cards to point shit it out here people. Then it added one huge error with the exception of styles from a look as in hair cuts and clothing the movies never give a timeline or date in them in any way this one slaps a giant 1998 up on screen to help with the captain explaino style it hands out to us as you go along. This is the rocky universe you dont just come in and start mixing it up thats like going into Marvel and making ANT-MAN(2015) like ROBOCOP(1987) sorry but no.
So any ways what did i hate about it and feel stupid or strange and out of place em well starting with hes raised by Apollos wife for some reason cause not only did his dad die but so did his mum guys got no fucking luck lol then he gets super lucky and a fucking millionaire wife/stepmom takes him in and raises him for more than 15 years but still hes a cunt ? didnt turn out to be some rich kid or spend it all nope they wanted the typical hes got nothing story line and no money hard on his luck bullshit sorry no hes living in what looks like a fucking palace driving some cool car and has zero problems but oks fine il go with you hes so street hes so hard done by fine.
Now we got Dukes kid who just happens to train people yeh ok fine super convenient but fine but hes a total asshole and doesnt seem to wana help him or train him and gives hims some bullshit like "aww you got no reason to fight these kids gotta fight for life" banter YAWNING.
So he just up n fucks off to Rockys place to bug him to train him ? i could see it if Rocky was training kids but to just show up and be like hey yeh fuck your place come train me haha no hes got a place to run get lost kid... also dont forget hes hes ment to be over 30 in order to fit with the timeline they forced in here you coulda had him like 21 as Rocky pushed back the age so like BALBOA(2006) did as it was kinda like a Foreman come back and making him a little younger than Sly really was. But ok fine you fuck up the age and reasons to get to Rocky and train with him then ends up at mickey micks gym to train an the we have some asshole trainer not helping him out yet again like wait so Rockys kid just sold the gym ? (yeh scene from ROCKY V(1990) the lawyer says the gym belongs to Rockys kid) any ways so the guy in the gyms a cunt and hes not helping no one but his kid lol every ones got a kid here working the gym or fighting like come on everyone ?
All this plus the bugging as fuck dialogue with some daft bitch saying "im trying to get to the reals" im sorry what now ? the reals bitch shut the fuck up you mean the truth dont fucking give me banter thats made up and only some director and actor use in one area of land in america cause making someone sound a cunt while trying to use english in a movie is pretty fucking hard to do yet you just did it dont try act or talk cool dont try put style in a movie it always fails like the MATRIX(1999) those jumper freeze camera spinning shit was so cool and such a style thing but by the time everyone copied it and used it for 3 years it was old and used and boring and only looks old and set in a certain time frame now when you see it in the 3rd matrix its like fuck off boring. This was a horrible use of english in a movie with people saying some dumb fucking things to sound hip and cool fuck off remember your in the rocky universe not coolville station or what every fucking movie you made. An as for her shes as boring and typical as it gets shes the kinda hot singer up n coming from the local club bla fucking bla give her some cornrows already. Woulda been more original if they had some white chic working the local market or stall or even a shop that he passes by daily.
Dont get me wrong the scene with Rocky are heart warming in some ways and heart breaking when he finds out hes ill and at the end when the kid delivers that brilliant line right before he gets up for one last round was great and heart warming but fuck up after bugging fuck up dont change shit. The movie has no build up no pace to it just scene after scene of talking and telling me stuff i dont care about or dont need to know while cutting out yet more stuff from the trailers and the kid Michael B does seem to be a nice guy but im getting that im over rated vibe from him now he may have been good in one movie but for me since then hes been in flop after flop and just phoning in some scenes and his constant i wanna fight stupid attitude during th movie screaming at the screen in some terrible random no build up running scene wtf is going on your in rocky 6.5 just won it and go do a real montage.
This mixed in with horrible fucking fight scene horrible one constant spinning camera in some scenes and then huge wide shots to show the ring but you can just see it and not see then fighters added to the constant pause mode when ever a boxer walks in and we get a page up on screen with his name and boxing record ? i dont care and i really dont need you to show me the main guy the movie is building up to fight then enter the arena and then pause to slap up his name n record WE FUCKING KNOW hes the champ and undefeated you said already. And the English guy with a Liverpool accent noooooo never use some non actor guy have you never learned Sly ? he cant act and its fucking terrible to hear him on screen adding to th epoor fights or lack of in some cases its a poor show all in.
This had so much potential and coulda been more focused on Rocky and Creed i say Creed as i hate his stupid fucking name they gave him but it coulda been about them two not some random girl not fighting the champ just like rocky 1 2 and 6 when hes not ranked its was poor and the directing for me was awful maybe the same script in the hands of Sly and then worked on some more coulda been like the heart felt story it shoulda been and a little like KARATE KID(1984) between the characters as it was it was kinda all over the place and just poorly edited and paced with some great lines at times but nothing was gonna save them from getting knocked the fuck out for me.
It is a rocky movie set in that universe they shoulda owned it and and went with it had a learning curve with the character had a build up a fight not with a champion but just a big fight at the end and a montage and owned it with the Rocky music not try make it all the same but it was just to much of a mess for me. Sly did such a great performance but you can tell its not his lines coming outa Rockys lips you can just feel its strange. for me this is a poor mans copy n paste with a black kid who shoulda been Creeds grand kid not some strippers kid with a stupid age range on him and his first few fights not hey im self taugh with a record of 16-0 fuck off then copy n paste the fight and how it comes about just like the last Rocky movie. Poor show and maybe one of those movies i never watch again as much as i loved the Rocky scenes i hated Creed.
